Instagram and Twitter are famous for their use of hashtags. But, what about LinkedIn? Not many people associate LinkedIn with hashtags, but they do have them and are pushing people to use them a lot recently!
When I first saw you could add hashtags, it surprised me! But, it is actually a really good idea and use of linking accounts. I want to show you everything I learnt about these LinkedIn hashtags, and why they can be great for businesses.
Exploring LinkedIn hashtags
You see hashtags pretty much straight away. Let’s take a look at my feed;
You can see in the left-hand corner, LinkedIn has given me some suggestions of which hashtags to use in the ‘Your communities’ tab. I hadn’t seen this before, so I wanted to investigate. Clicking ‘discover more’ takes you to a page where all of LinkedIn’s suggested hashtags for your industry are.
As you can see, there are a lot! This page gives you the chance to follow any of these hashtags you might be interested in. Think about which ones are the most related to you and your LinkedIn account and give them a follow! Following hashtags means you can see everything that everyone is posting about using the same hashtag. Plus, this makes it nice and easy to join in any conversations people on that page may be having. The networking possibilities are endless!
Using LinkedIn hashtags
Adding hashtags into your posts is really easy, but it depends on what your post is actually about. For example, I’ve written a post on LinkedIn about a new blog I was sharing;
As you write your post, suggested hashtags start to appear relating to what you’re writing. You can pick from any of these, so I picked #livestreaming, #videoconferencing and #googling as they fit in the most with post. All you need to do is give the ones you want to use a click, and they will appear at the end of your post! It really is as easy as that.
You don’t have to use the suggested hashtags either, if you’re feeling brave why not create your own hashtag and see if people engage with it?
So…why would you use them?
You might be thinking why would I want to use hashtags on LinkedIn, it’s not the same as Twitter or LinkedIn? Obviously, LinkedIn is very different from other social media. It’s a lot more professional and rotates around industries and job roles. But, this doesn’t mean you can’t use typical social media features like hashtags. The reasons businesses use LinkedIn hashtags is usually one of these two;
LinkedIn’s hashtags are used for one main reason – networking. The hashtags feature means you’ll be found easier by any potential employers, employees or partner companies. These people may not have found you before, so your hashtags will have worked really well. Being found easily means you have much more opportunity to build your connections and networks, meaning your page is developing professionally. After all, LinkedIn is essentially designed for business networking. Hashtags completely open up your possibilities of engagement with a huge range of people.
Staying on topic
Adding in some hashtags into your posts not only helps you network easier but helps to filter your feed. LinkedIn can recognise what sort of things you’ll like to see on your feed by seeing which hashtags you’ve used. Matching content on your feed with the hashtags you use means everything that comes up will probably be of interest to you and worth a look at. Having relevant content on your feed gives you the chance to see anything that might be inspirational and spark some content ideas of your own.
Have a play with the LinkedIn hashtags and see which ones get the best response!
