5 tips on exit pop-ups

5 Tips for Creating Exit Pop-Ups

Web Development

One of the main goals for all digital marketers out there is to have the highest possible conversion rate. With all of the effort it takes to actually get people to your site, the last thing you want to happen is for visitors to leave without carrying out the action you want them to. Be that; enter an email address, share your post, or purchase a product. Exit pop-ups are your last hope of getting that all important conversion. For those who may be unfamiliar with exit pop-ups, they are a type of pop-up that appears to a user when they are trying to navigate away from your site. They are a brilliant last-ditch attempt to encourage users convert or at least stay on your site. Providing they have been created properly and optimised of course. Which is why we’ve brought you these 5 tips for creating your own exit pop-ups. So, let’s move onto the tips…

Bold Design

The first quality an effective exit pop-up must have is the ability to grab the reader’s attention. A great way to make sure you grab the reader’s attention is to have a simple, bold design. This is generally a good idea as you can stand out while still conveying your marketing message. Your design should direct the users to the message, not distract them from reading your content. Use a big exit pop-up with big text to try and achieve this! Let’s move onto tip #2.

Speak to Your Audience

Due to the fact that your exit pop-ups will only appear to a user when they are trying to exit your site, you need to personalise the text to speak to them directly in that situation. Effective exit pop-ups usually speak to the reader using terms such as; ‘leaving so soon?’, ‘sorry to see you go’, and ‘wait, don’t go’. These sort of messages shows that you know the user is thinking of leaving, which gives you the opportunity to create a sense of urgency and/or offer them something to stay. For example, you could have an exit pop-up that would only show to a user if they were about to abandon your shopping cart. In a last-ditch attempt to gain the sale, you could use an exit pop-up to offer the user 30% off their cart on that day only. Beginning to see how exit pop-ups can help your business? If so, take a look at our 3rd tip.

Include Attractive Offer

This tip is closely related to the example we mentioned above. Now, I know giving an offer isn’t ideal for your profit margins. However, 70% of a sale is better than 100% of no sale! Obviously, the type of offer you give is completely up to you as it is unique to your business and products. But in general, using offers on your exit pop-ups is a great way to make people take action as they feel they are gaining something. It’s been found that a massive 2 out of 3 users will subscribe if they receive some financial benefit. Be that; a discount, free shipping or downloading an E-book for free when it usually costs £60.

Include a Clear Call-To-Action

This is a tip that appears across many areas of digital marketing and for good reason! When creating your exit pop-ups, you need to think about what you want the visitor to do after seeing it. Not only that you need to think about and how they are going to complete that action. This is where your call-to-actions come in. Tell your user what you want them to do, and make it easy for them to do it. For example, imagine that the action that you want a user to take is to sign up to your mailing list. Use call-to-action text such as; ‘sign up for an exclusive discount’ and provide the user with a box and button to input and submit their email address. The trick is to make it as simple as possible for the user to carry out the desired action. Let’s move onto our last (but not least) tip for creating exit pop-ups.

Add a Countdown Timer

Nothing creates a sense of urgency like a countdown clock! Just think about the TV show countdown, as soon as that timer starts, contestants are hit with a surge of urgency that time is running out. That feeling is what we want your target audience to feel so that they take action. Just think about it, are you more likely to sign up to receive a 10% offer that is available all year round, or are you more likely to sign up to receive a 10% offer that is only available until the end of the month? Most likely the answer is the one with a time limit (well, we hope so anyway). Creating this sense of urgency, scarcity, and exclusivity can have a staggering effect on your conversions from exit pop-ups!

Follow these 5 tips and include them all in your next exit pop-up and a guarantee you will see improvements in your conversion rates!
